Ask world champion bodyboarders a question!!!

This is your opportunity to submit questions for 3 of the top dogs in bodyboarding today!  All of which have held the world title in their careers.  Spunjah Chronic will be interviewing Jeff Hubbard, Mike Stewart & Guilherme Tamega for the new NS2010 DVD release slated for July 2010.  Send in any and all questions pertaining to the these men riding waves and experiencing the north shore on top of anything else you would like to ask.  The best questions will be selected on Wednesday June 30th, 2010 which is when the interviews will be taking place.  Email all questions to spunjahchronic@hotmail.com with the word “Question” Please do not forget to include the name of the rider you would like to ask the question to.

The poeple who ask the questions that are selected and answered in the NS 2010 DVD will recieve a free copy after it’s release!!!

Jeff Hubbard hails from the island of Kauai in the state of Hawaii.  He is an aerial specialist on the North Shore and is always a standout.  Jeff is down to surf anything on the north shore and is always in search of something to improve his riding.  Jeff has been boosting in the North Shore since the early 90s believe it or not and still remains an icon to the new generation of bodyboaders.  The picture above shows Jeff doing an air reverse on a mediocre day at Rocky Point, this stuff happens regularly in all sizes of surf for Hubb.  Despite his busy schedule he is always “on it” to say the least.

Guilherme Tamega is from Brazil and came from the ground up in bodyboarding since the late 1980′s.  Tamega was always known for raw power and the balls out attitude in big waves.  He really started to get recognized in the early 90s because of his huge pipe pits and massive air spins.  Tamega is an animal on the North Shore and is sometimes forgotten by the media in the rat race there.  This time around in the NS2010 DVD we want you to pick Tamega’s brain and see what makes him tick after all these years.

The framegrab above shows Tamega pulling into what surfer Jaime Obrien called “the wave of the year at pipeline”!  Check out the NS 2010 DVD to see Tamega get spit out of this beast!

Mike Stewart, what can we say?  Well what do you want him to say?!!? This is one of the main reasons that we wanted to involve what legend Ben Severson labels as “The Godfather of Bodyboarding”.  That’s a very prestigious title to hold.  And a well deserving one for that matter.  Mike is recognized around the world by waveriders of all types including Surfers, Longboarders, Bodysurfers and more!  The North Shore is one of the coastlines of the world that MADE Mike’s career and still does to this day.  In his mid 40s Mike is one of the oldest bodyboarders to still consistently ride Pipeline.  But don’t let that word old deceive you because he’s still knocking out people in their 20s and 30s on the world tour.  That tells you alot about his dedication and discipline in the sport.  Mike is from Kona Hawaii and was part of the revolution for bodyboarding.  Mike was hitting reverse airs in the late 80s on boards that you might find at a rental stand today at Waikiki Beach!  Pictured above Mike hits an air forward in 2010.  Check out the NS 2010 DVD to see Mike complete the air spin.  Fire away at Mike, a rare opportunity like this does not come often!!!

Don’t forget to check these three elite rider’s websites and dig deeper!

Cutting back…

As it seems like everythings about cutbacks around the world financially, the bodyboarders are definitly doing their part.  Spencer Skipper here shows that it’s not always about how insane and deathdafying the wave is but more so how well the wave is utilized.  Take some style points from this photo.

What about the girls???

So when was the last time you seen a chic on the cover of a bodyboarding magazine in America???  We honestly can’t recall and furthermore we can’t recall the last time we’ve seen a bodyboarding magazine in America in the last few months!!!  Well don’t fear Spunjah Chronic is here with the coverage!!!  Karla Costa Taylor on the cover pictured above on an original copy of the October 1998 Bodyboarding Magazine (R.I.P.) that we had in the Spunjah Chronic office.  That’s over 11 years ago!  Well just to let you know the girls are still around and we’ve got the exclusive interviews with some of the female bodyboarders today!…

Yeah so what about girls?  Can they bodyboard?  Of course they can!!! This isn’t the NFL, this is bodyboarding and you are tuned to Spunjah Chronic and that’s what we’re all about.  We can’t get enough of bodyboarding.  About two weeks have passed since the North Shore Soap Factory Women’s Pipeline Pro.  Heights Productions CEO Mark B has provided us with some handheld footage from the contest water patrol tent.  Mark says “I was in the water down the beach and could hear on the loudspeaker that the finals were coming up and Heights Productions needed to be on it so I hung up the board for a bit and checked it out…”.  The finals brought an interesting mix of riders out into the mix including Brazilian Karla Costa Taylor, Japan’s Sari Ohara, Venezuela’s Lumar Gittard and Hawaii’s own Jade Robles.  Although the waves were small this was the time to shine for the women at Pipe.  Whether it’s 1-2 feet or cracking on the outer reefs Pipeline possesses a high risk in all conditions.  This time around the waves were in the 3 foot + range and the women made the most of it.  Check out the video below for the recap of some highlight waves.

World Class competition in Brazil…

A big congratulations goes out to Pierre Louis Costes of France.  He has won the IBA world tour event in Buzios, Brazil. Watch as he celebrates his victory in the video below.  When the Spunjah Chronic staff first met Pierre here in Hawaii he was nearly 15 years old and already possessed some serious talent on a bodyboard.  We were formally introduced to him through his good friend and Shark Island Challenge winner Ewan Donnachie.  Over the last 5+ years we’ve seen Pierre evolve into a heavy hitter in professional bodyboarding.  Much respect Pierre.

The video was contributed by SpunjahChronic.com associate Mike Stewart.  Mike Stewart has provided us with coverage fresh off the presses directly from Brazil.  Early on in the 2009 world tour competition of bodyboarding Mike has been bringing us up to date coverage of his travels ever since.  The raw guerilla style coverage from a small cellular phone is bringing an element to the sport that has been long forgotten, RAW footage!

For more videos and extended coverage of Pierre’s win and the past, present and future news about the IBA World Tour check out their website.  IBAWORLDTOUR.COM

Welcome to the green room…

It’s a saying you would hear in the late 90s on Morey commercials as Spencer Skipper would enter the green room with his new Mach 25.  Over 10 years later Spencer Skipper & some others are pulling into green rooms and it’s all for the pure euphoric sensation that can’t be explained but never gets old…SPUNJAHCHRONIC
