Meet Mr. Patterson…

Mr. Patterson, a man of many talents and interests. We don’t want to tell you too much about him because we wouldn’t have anything left to say about him in the future! Just kidding. Mr. P is one of Spunjah Chronic’s associates here in Hawaii. Originally from Ohai Street on the edge of Wahiawa, he’s resided in Hawaii all his life with the exception of a short stint in California where he reached for the stars with his passion for music but couldn’t make the tryouts for American Idol so he has resorted back to being well a Spunjah Chronic.

Keiki Ocean Fest Gets Serious…

Jeff Hubbard may have to get used to this feeling of Nick Reeves (son of legend Hauoli Reeves) boosting airs over him soon out at the pipline.  In this photo Nick is picking up right where his father left off and flying high over Jeff Hubbard & Robbie Gall’s keiki at Sherwoods Beach this past weekend at the USBA Keiki Ocean Fest.  Nick is quite a character, we’ve got an interview with him and footage of some of these aerial tactics by the Reeves family coming soon on spunjahchronic.com so stay tuned!

Mahalo to Danny Black for graciously sharing his photos with us

All the final heats were exciting and down to the wire. Jeff Hubbard barely edged out aerial guru Jacob Romero in the final minutes of the heat as did David Hubbard over Bud Miyamoto in the drop knee finals. Also if there were awards for stamina in the competition we’d have to give it to Elemnohpee team rider Willy Petrovic for surfing numerous back to back heats and making both the Open Pro final and the Drop Knee Pro final. Solid Willy P! It has also been a while since some representatives of the Hawaiian women pro bodyboarders have made finals at the Sandy Beach Pro. Props go out to Kelly Gordon of Maui and Jade Robles of Oahu who placed 3rd & 4th in the Women’s pro final. Mahalo to all those who came down to support especially those who traveled a little further than the outer islands to get here.

DK style at bowls

Jacob Pembrook says “these are some of the best waves I’ve ever gotten on the south shore of Oahu!”. We got the call from the heights at 4:30am that the crew was on it’s way to Ala Moana Bowls after hearing Jacob hype the day before. With usual low expectations for the waves in Honolulu the Heightsproductions crew was quite surprised when they rolled up seeing Jacob out at bowls with only 10 other surfers and more than enough waves spitting in the 2-4 foot range. The crowdless conditions remained until about 10:30am when hordes of bodies showed up to get in on the action. By then Jacob was surfed out and is now looking forward to the next south swell. Take a look at some of the action provided to us by Heights Productions.

Jacob Pembrook

Jacob’s sponsors include Mike Stewart Science bodyboards as well as Viper & MS Viper fins. He’s riding the Science DK5 board and the MS Viper fins. Notice in the last wave Jacob gets barreled and comes out with only one fin! Looks like he’s gonna have to get another new MS Viper fin. If your in need of a pair of these high performance fins check out your local shop or theboardstoreandmore.com. Also check out www.mikestewart.com for specs on the full line of Science bodyboards.

Sandy Beach action

Aloha to all viewers and welcome to the very first element of the Spunjah Chronic video magazine

Spunjah Chronic cofounder David Hubbard was right here in Oahu for the last 3 days!  We were stoked that we had time to catch up with our fellow brethren.  Dubb was in Honolulu for the Point Panic RedWing Cleaver World Bodysurfing Championships.  Dubb and a number of other hybrid bodyboarders entered the competition and concluded with excellent results.  We’ll have video footage of that later on!

Enjoy some of the action at Sandy Beach Dubb and friends displayed.  They put on quite a show for the Heights Productions video cameras.  Many of those featured in this edition are top contenders in the USBA Sandy Beach Pro going down this 4th of July weekend at Sandy Beach.  There is a south swell lining up just in time for the contest so it’s one not to miss.  Get down to sandy beach because fireworks are going to go off this weekend!

ALOHA,

SPUNJAH CHORNIC
